What are the different types of sinusitis?

Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses become inflamed or infected. The lining of the sinuses can swell, which can block the channels that drain the sinuses and cause mucus and pus to fill up the nose and sinus cavities.

But did you know that there are different types of sinusitis? This condition can be classified in a few different ways, and it’s helpful to know which type of sinusitis you’re suffering from in order to get help.

Types of Sinusitis

Acute sinusitis: This is categorized by the condition with symptoms like cloudy or colored drainage from the nose lasting more than 30 days.

Chronic sinusitis: Also known as a chronic sinus infection, this is defined having a duration of three months.

Infected sinusitis: This is typically caused by a viral infection of the sinuses.

Non-infected sinusitis: This is caused by allergic conditions or irritants.

Treating Sinusitis

When sinusitis stops or won’t respond to antibiotics, decongestants, nasal steroid sprays or antihistamines surgery may be required to enlarge the openings that drain sinuses.
